Films Al Fresco!

Drive-ins may now be few and far between, but there are still several opportunities to catch a movie outdoors this summer. Perhaps the most famous is DC’s “Screen on The Green” – which shows classic films on a 20 x 40 foot screen on the National Mall, between 8th and 14th Street. This years lineup includes “In the Heat of the Night”, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”, and “Cool Hand Luke”.

However, if you would prefer to stay in Arlington (or if you have a slightly different definition of what constitutes a “classic” film!), you have a couple alternative options

Rosslyn Film Festival

The Rosslyn Outdoor Film Festival has been successfully held in Gateway Park (on Lee Highway, by Key Bridge) for several years now. Every year the movies, screened on Fridays typically from May-end of August, have a theme – this year is “SNL in the Movies”. As such, the schedule includes a plethora of movies starring former Saturday Night Live grads, from “Animal House” to “Happy Gilmore” to “Mean Girls”. Gateway Park is only about 2-3 blocks from the Rosslyn Meto; there’s also street and garage parking available. The event is free and open to the public, and the movie starts at dusk – but you’ll want to show up early for a good seat, and many arrive hours in advance with picnic blankets and coolers!

Crystal City also now has its own al fresco screenings – the Crystal Screen Outdoor Film Festivalis held on Monday evenings, this year from June 6-August 29 2011. Its held in the courtyard of1850 Bell Street, essentially diagonal from the Metro. This event is also themed – this yearCrystalCityis “By The Numbers”, showing all films with numerals in their title (including “16 Candles”, “50 First Dates”, “Oceans 11” and “40-Year-Old Virgin”).

Summer 2011 Schedule

Both events are well-situated in terms of public transportation, and are relatively family-friendly, depending on the movie being shown (use your best judgment).
