Strange Dichotomy: Arlington Has A Lot, But Some Local Families Don’t Have Enough

In 2011, Arlington County had the 11th highest median household income in the country. In Bloomberg BusinessWeek’s September list of the 50 Best Cities, Arlington was ranked #2. CNN Money rated us the 7th best city in America for the “Rich and Single”.  And, per ArlNow.Com, last week the number of families served by the Arlington Food Assistance Center hit an all time high – over 1570 families, or more than 4000 individuals.  This is after August saw AFAC hit a record high in average number of families served, a 19% increase over this time last year.

A Beginners Guide to Speed Traps in Arlington

Speed Trap Heading North on Carlin Springs towards Ballston

The first time I was pulled over for speeding in Arlington, I was a 15-year-old passenger on my way to Washington-Lee High School. We were running late that morning and were caught on a notorious “cut-through” street near Ballston, which has since been peppered with speed bumps to dissuade drivers from similar transgressions. The reality was, we didn’t know at the time that this was a go-to spot for police to issue tickets.

In the interest of helping other drivers avoid the money and headache involved, here’s a quick run-down of some of the most notable speed traps in North Arlington:  Read more…

Where Can You Get “Stranded at the Drive-In” This Summer?

There’s certainly something to be said for 3-D, IMAX, stadium seating, etc…  However, that’s not the only way to watch a movie. Who’s to say it’s even the best?

Sandy and Danny at the Drive-In

I re-watched “Grease” recently, and this week I’ve been on a mission to find a drive-in movie theater in Arlington. Not an OUTDOOR movie – we’ve got plenty of those – but an old school, park in a field, speaker next to the car, buy popcorn at a slightly sketchy concession stand Drive-In Movie. Read more…

Baby You’re a Firework…. Independence Day in Arlington County

You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine / Just own the night like the 4th of July

Yes, yes, it’s the inevitable “where to go in Arlington to see fireworks on the 4th” post (along with the equally inevitable in 2011 Katy Perry quote!).

Arlington County’s Department of Parks and Recreation no longer provides a public fireworks show – which is a shame. It used to be held (until approximately 2004) at Barcroft Park along Four Mile Run and was a terrific family-oriented event. They halted it because of ongoing construction at Barcroft, and it’s my impression that the fireworks display never resumed, presumably based on budget cuts.

Of course, it seems silly to complain about not having our own fireworks when Arlington has one of the best seats in the house to watch the *NATIONAL* Washington DC 4th of July Fireworks Display! If fighting the crowds, traffic, and security on the mall isn’t your cup of tea, Arlington provides several terrific alternative views! Read more…

Arlington On Film – Depictions of Our Area on the Big and Small Screen

It certainly feels like the only (or possibly most accurate?) representation of Arlington on film is local star Remy’s famous You Tube video “Arlington: The Rap” in which he exposes our town’s noted preference for German luxury cars, Whole Foods, tiny dogs, brown flip-flops, and Starbucks.

But Arlington has actually appeared or been referenced in a number of notable movies and television shows!  When watching movies that feature the DC area, it’s always fun to try to quickly pick out Arlington landmarks during the inevitable establishing shot from above (National Airport and Key Bridge are probably the easiest to spot!).  Read more…
